Nostalgia

~ June 13, 2008 at 6:51 (Views: 74 )

I've been on a country music kick lately, specifically 70s and early 80s country. It's what I grew up listening to, so it's been a fun nostalgia trip to compile a list of songs that were in heavy rotation on my local country station back then. I keep thinking of just one more song that will make the list complete. I'm at 118 "just one mores" and counting.

Yesterday, I was playing this list, and Alabama's Roll On Eighteen Wheeler came on. If you're not familiar with the song, the lyrics, briefly, are about a man who drives an 18-wheeler for a living and who gets lost in a snowstorm on one of his runs. His family waits by the phone, praying for word that he's been found, and -- happy ending! -- he is, and he's fine. One of the lines is, "The man upstairs was listening when Mama asked him to bring Daddy home," and I had a good chuckle at myself remembering that when I was a kid, I always thought this meant that the family's upstairs neighbor had gone out looking for the lost trucker.

Allergies

~ April 26, 2008 at 21:12 (Views: 46 )

What is it about allergies that makes them ten times worse if you attend to them? I can walk around all day with mildly itchy eyes and a tickle in my throat, but if I forget myself for a minute and rub my eyes, suddenly they are on fire and tears are streaming from them. Or if I scratch my throat (yes, I can scratch my throat -- with my tongue; don't ask) it suddenly feels like it's swollen shut and grown a fur coat. I'm sure there's a scientific explanation for this phenomenon. Does anyone know what it is?

Seasons of Love

I was doing some Saturday morning surfing and ran across this video on a blog I read. I love a cappella music -- most of the time, anyway -- and really enjoyed this. Besides that, I didn't know Jesse L. Martin could sing! I remember him from Law & Order, but I had no idea he was part of the cast of Rent. (It's dark and cozy under this rock. Thanks for asking.)

Kinda Cool YouTubery

~ April 24, 2008 at 9:13 (Views: 41 )

Most of the time, I find it kind of disappointing when I'm looking for a particular tune on YouTube and have to wade through a bunch of videos of people singing in their bedrooms. Let's face it -- a lot of those folks singing in their bedrooms just aren't that good. (I sing in my bedroom, too, and trust me, it sucks.) Not so this time, though! This girl's video came up for me on MyStrandsTV, and caught my interest enough that I clicked through to YouTube to see if she had anything else up. Turns out she's quite prolific, and has some of her original tunes up, too. She has a really interesting and powerful voice (I think) and it's very cool that she does her own harmonies. Plus, she's just adorable to watch -- she looks like she's having such a great time. (If you like this, try her cover of It's Raining Men.)

Remakes That Rock

~ March 8, 2008 at 15:40 (Views: 164 )

All right, so I've complained about awful remakes, and I could continue to do so. (Avril Lavigne's cover of Chop Suey! by System of a Down? [Yes, really...someone sent me a YouTube link to it.] No!! Big & Rich's country version of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long? Just plain wrong!!) It seems only right, though to balance things out with some praise for remakes that get it right.

I recently recreated, in iTunes, a mix tape that I made off the radio in 1986 and to do so, I had to buy True Colors by Cyndi Lauper. I already had Phil Collins' version from Hits and I decided to play the two songs back to back, just to see how they compared. I was happy to find that I love them equally!

I've known and liked Wild World by Cat Stevens since I first heard it in 1989 or so. I was recently introduced to Maxi Priest's version of the same song, and I kind of braced myself before listening, knowing how I usually feel about remakes. The remake is very different from the original in instrumentation and tempo. Cat Stevens' version is stripped-down folk and Maxi Priest's is faster and has a slightly reggae feel to it, but I like it just as well as the original, if not a little better.

Oof

~ March 5, 2008 at 12:21 (Views: 36 )

I just experienced the worst iTunes library transition that I have yet: Heavens On Fire on Konfidential by Kiss to All The Gold In California on 16 Biggest Hits by Larry Gatlin/Gatlin Brothers.

My head hurts now.

Self-Delusional Media

~ January 31, 2008 at 10:57 (Views: 67 )

Apparently, there's a tape circulating of Heath Ledger at a party where people might have been using drugs, and Entertainment Tonight has somehow acquired that tape. Here's the quote from CNN that really irritates me: "Out of respect for Heath Ledger's family, 'Entertainment Tonight' and 'The Insider' have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video that has been circulating in the world media." Oh, please. I don't think you can really portray yourself as respectful if you're just the least predatory of all the vultures. Geez.

"Cops won't question Olsen about Ledger's death."

So that's ... no story at all, right? Well, thanks a million for keeping us informed.

Remakes That Don't Quite Make it

~ January 7, 2008 at 9:45 (Views: 80 )

Many times, I find that song covers just don't do much for me. The best example I can think of is Missing You on Rock On 1984 by John Waite. It's been covered many times but, to my ear, no one else has come even close to making a song as good as the original. Another that comes to mind is Shameless on Ropin' The Wind by Garth Brooks. I'm a little backwards here, because I heard Garth's version long before I heard Billy Joel's original and can therefore never make the original sound quite right, but the principle is the same. The song that got me thinking about remakes this morning was Reason To Believe on Wilson Phillips by Wilson Phillips. It's a pretty enough song -- nice harmonies, which, of course, is Wilson Phillips' trademark, but, wow, do they miss the mark on the kind of angst the lyrics are talking about and that Rod Stewart's voice conveys so well.

Observation

When listened to in the shower, a lot of music sounds very much like a baby crying in the next room.
